Untangling a life
The moving-out-in-a-weekend checklist
Sometimes you don't get two weeks. You need to be out by Sunday night, and the size of it freezes you in place. So this is the whole thing in small pieces: book a few things, pack in the right order, and handle the admin bits that bite you later.
Before the weekend (do these now)
- Book your muscle. A moving truck or van, or a couple of friends and pizza money, or a moving service if the budget's there. Reserve it early — weekends go fast.
- Grab supplies. Boxes, tape, a marker, trash bags (great for clothes and soft stuff), and a few "essentials" bins you can find fast.
- Line up where you're going — even if it's a friend's spare room for two weeks. You don't need the whole future figured out, just Sunday night.
- File your change of address with USPS (there's a small card-verification fee — the free-looking third-party sites are best avoided). Mail forwarding kicks in within a few days.
- Photograph the place before you touch anything, and again once it's empty — proof for your security deposit.
Friday night: the essentials box
Pack one box or bag you keep with you, not on the truck:
- Medications, glasses, chargers, toiletries, a couple of days of clothes.
- Documents — passport, birth certificate, Social Security card, lease, anything hard to replace.
- Valuables and anything sentimental you can't risk losing in the shuffle.
- Phone charger, a power strip, and a basic tool for furniture (an Allen key set & screwdriver covers most of it).
Saturday: the big haul
- Pack by room, label by room. It makes unloading at midnight far less miserable.
- Disassemble the big stuff (bed frame, desk) and bag the screws — tape the bag to the furniture.
- Load heaviest first, fragile last.
- Take only what's yours or clearly agreed. If something's contested, leave it rather than turn moving day into a fight.
Sunday: the handover
- Clean enough to protect the deposit — floors, surfaces, fridge, bathroom.
- Final walk-through with your photos; check every drawer and closet.
- Return keys, fobs, garage remotes, and any building equipment.
- Return the internet router / cable box to the provider so you're not billed for it.
The easy-to-forget list
The stuff that surfaces two weeks later:
- Update your address with your bank, employer, DMV, voter registration, insurance, and any subscriptions shipping to the old place.
- Split or cancel shared accounts — utilities in your name, streaming, a shared cloud/photo plan, or a shared phone plan.
- The pet — food, bowls, meds, and any agreement about who they're with.
- Spare keys you gave out, and any you were given.
- Mail that'll keep coming for months — the forwarding buys you time to update everything.
A different kind of checklist
Writing the logistics down is easy. Doing all this while you're heartbroken is not. Go one box at a time, and when it gets heavy, our 14-day plan to feel like a person again is there for the after.
If you don't feel safe moving out
If leaving could put you in danger, don't do it alone or unplanned — a domestic-violence advocate can help you make a safety plan. In the US, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233 (call or text, 24/7, free). In immediate danger, call 911.
